It looks like there is a meeting on 24/1 according to the Wiki but I've seen no reminder... Can anybody confirm one way or the other? I'd like to go so I can hand over my membership forms and pay my cash since I'm already quite good at sending all sorts to the mailing list ;-)

library books/cdroms

Hi everyone, just a general reminder that WLUG has a bunch of books and cdroms to lend out to paid-up WLUG members. We've recently received a few review copies of new books, so feel free to borrow any and post a review of it onto the wlug website. http://library.wlug.org.nz/show.pl?recent=10 There's a meeting next Monday so we can arrange to bring any requested books along (and if you have an issued item this would be a good opportunity to return it). Lastly, we can ask for more review copies of things if people request them. If you would like us to acquire something, go to the http://www.wlug.org.nz/WantedBooks wiki page and feel free to edit it, adding the publisher, book name, and your name in the appropriate place. Hi The site is very specific about shipment times and release times and they document this well. The orders it seems are processed in South Africa and shipped from Switzerland (well mine was, but it is a small world anyway). Mine took a while (about 6 weeks), but I am sure the Xmas rush is to blame. The balance of the CDs I will try to get to the next meeting and whoever wants can grab. Configuring konqueror/kate in KDE

Hi, I have a Debian machine and a Mandrake machine both running KDE. I have configured the default text editor on both to be kate so that if I double click a file in konqueror it opens in kate. If I double click a second file in konqueror then on the Debian box it opens as another tab in the already running instance of kate, but on the Mandrake box it opens in a new instance of kate. How do I configure the Mandrake box to act like the Debian box? Good Day The guys at uBuntu have sent me some uBuntu disks in original sleeves etc. There is no real advantage to these except they are already here. I have: 5 x x86 CDs (includes live CD in sleeve) 2 x 64bit (AMD and EMT) CDs 2 x PPC CDs If anybody wants, first come, first serve. All version 4.10 details on thier site. Rgds Gund

Converting Video Formats

Hi First off, welcome to 2005. Next, has anybody had any fun converting media in Linux (or W32 for that matter)? I have several AVi files (in DV1 format) that have been ripped from my old and dying camera and I have now many Gigs of AVIs I would like to make into MPEGs or similar, if for no reason other than to reduce thier size. I have tried some W32 applications that do not preserve the quality or even the size of the videos and after a few weeks, I have come to the conclusion, that not even paid for software is good for me. Any ideas for Linux or W32 greatly appreciated. Rgds Gund

Thanx for all the help I now have a clearer understanding about Linux file types. I was trying to find something with extensions to differentiate the types of files as in Windows. (Laudy hush ma mouth)
