The Microsoft Antivirus Reward Program In an effort to help law enforcement agencies identify and bring to justice those who illegally release damaging worms, viruses, and other types of malicious code on the Internet, Microsoft has created the Microsoft® Antivirus Reward Program, initially funded with US$5 million. Through this program, Microsoft will offer monetary rewards to persons who provide information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for launching malicious viruses and worms on the Internet. Both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Secret Service, in coordination with Interpol, will investigate leads that are provided through this program in order to identify and prosecute those responsible for such crimes that harm the private industry and the public. $750,000 in Awards Currently Offered Microsoft is offering three rewards under the Antivirus Rewards Program. . The first reward, in the amount of US$250,000, is for information that results in the arrest and conviction of those responsible for launching the MSBlast.A worm (also known as Blaster). The worm was designed to prevent consumers from installing the latest software updates by attacking Microsoft's Windows® Update website, which provides updates to help users protect their computers against malicious attacks. . The second reward, in the amount of $250,000, is for information that results in the arrest and conviction of those responsible for launching the Sobig virus. This virus, the first variant of which was detected on January 10, 2003, attacked individual machines and sent itself to each e-mail address in the computer's contact list. The Sobig.B and Sobig.C variants of the virus made messages appear as if they had come from official Microsoft e-mail addresses. . The third reward, in the amount of $250,000, is for information that results in the arrest and conviction of those responsible for launching the Mydoom.B worm. Mydoom.B is a variant of the MyDoom.A worm, also known as the Novarg worm, which spread quickly to infect computers worldwide. The release of Mydoom.B triggered the first alert from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's new National Cyber Alert System.

New releases today

Slashdot will no doubt have picked up on these, but Fedora Core 3 and the Novell Linux Desktop 9 have both been released. FC3 is available from http://fedora.redhat.com/ (use the torrent at http://torrent.dulug.duke.edu/) - we'll have it by the end of the day and I'm sure that some people will grab it from those who have it and arrange distribution. The NLD is a "commercial product" with a "30 day evaluation version", which is the standard full version with a Novell ZENworks (Red Carpet, for those who remember Ximian) Update code valid that's only valid for 30 days - you can still use it forever. Based on Phil Kangro's demonstration and reviews, it sounds like this will be a very interesting release. Built on SUSE 9.2 and running GNOME 2.6, this is basically what Ximian do now. Books... anyone want these?

Hi. I have a few books I no longer need. They aren't Linux related but some geeks amongst you all might want them. They are: Access 97 Developers Handbook - good Access 97 programming manual, probably applies to later versions but I've never used Access past the '97 version so I wouldn't know. Programming Windows 95 (Charles Petzold) - The Petzold books a very good. Held up as the best Windows API books etc. Obviously this is a tad out of date as the Win32 API has moved on a bit but I'm sure a lot of it is still useful to some degree. This teachs the Win32 API. No frameworks. Just raw C API. Programming Windows 95 with MFC. If you want to be productive programming GUI apps in Windows you need to learn some sort of framework. MFC is Microsoft's framework of doom. No doubt this book is very aged. I imagine MFC would have moved on quite a lot since this was published. But it may still be somewhat relevant. However if I was to write a GUI app in Windows these days I'd write it in C# or some such thing. If anyone has any interest please email me. Otherwise I'll try and find homes for them on Trademe... I would have got my ear clipped for this 15-20 years ago. Yep, if there is a young fella who has done an electrical pre-apprenticeship course, or is an electrical apprentice who needs to kill some hours of of his/her apprenticeship, then I could do do with some assistance with fitting off a house that is being built by Habitat For Humanity, it is voluntary work (you will be working for God), but there is an inroad to learning a useful trade. I would also be happy with someone who current holds his/her EST practicing licence. I will be doing the fit off sometime this week.

Anyone else noted landscape printing problems?

Yesterday I had some difficulty trying to address a set of envelopes for an organisation that I belong to. Was using Open Office (using mail merge) running under Fedora Core 2. The envelopes were being printed in landscape mode. The problem was that the addresses did not print at the planned position. Changing margins etc, to try and fix the problem didn't work as sometimes the shift in location didn't match the change! In order to get the job done, I had to use Open Office running under Windows XP. Also, I've noted that sometimes when I specify a custom page size, all I get is a blank sheet! The fix to that problem is to specify A4 and adjust right and bottom margins to suit. Comments, anyone? Michael
