The minutes of our committee meeting are now up at http://www.wlug.org.nz/CommitteeMeetingTopics.2006-07-20 (when the meetings are at my house, I can take them live to the internet a lot easier!) We regret to announce the resignation of Gian Perrone from the WLUG committee, effective immediately. A replacement member will not be sought as we are due to have an AGM in a couple of months. A couple of questions for our community.. - Are you interested in helping out on our advocacy display on September 16? We expect to have a stand with PCs, demos and giveaways running at Centreplace. If you are available, or want to help organise the event, please add your name to http://www.wlug.org.nz/MeetingTopics.2006-09-16. - If WLUG held Linux training, would you be interested in attending? What would you want to learn? Would you, or your employer, pay, especially if there was the possibility of gaining a certification at the end of it? We also think that Hamilton needs a Thursday Night Curry, and if you bug us enough, we might just book a Thursday for it! Craig

Audio sub-systems on Linux

I notice that Craig discusses these a bit on his latest blog at: http://craig.dubculture.co.nz/blog/2006/07/20/audio-on-ubuntu/ Craig - can you (or anyone else?) explain to me how Jack fits into all of this? Jack is mentioned at: http://jackit.sourceforge.net/docs/faq.php http://jackaudio.org/ I've seen quite a bit of mention of Jack around the place (as well as GStreamer) and haven't noticed PulseAudio much at all. It seems clear that OSS is going away and what Craig says about ESD makes sense as well... Now Alsa is at the kernel level for devices and doesn't seem to face any real competition. How do the other bits fit togther though? SCO OpenServer 5

If anyone has the install disk(s) for SCO OpenServer, I would be very interested in getting hold of them. I'm trying to migrate someone from a legacy system to Linux and it would be very handy (almost essential!) to set up a mirror of their current server to work with.

router disconnecting

Hi people, okay I had a big crash and lost loads of data in windows plus system got trashed so decided to give ubuntu dapper a go on my laptop. no worries after much hacking away got everything working how I want it. now however there is a problem. I have a dlink dsl-302g modem. now whenever I run the laptop after a few minutes the router disconnects then reconnects and this happens again and again whenever the laptop is on. it doesn't happen with my windows machines and if I turn the laptop off the connection is constant for 24+ hours. I emailed the slingshot help desk and they say it's a line fault and it's going to cost $88 to have it looked at. but it only happens when the laptop is on the network. any ideas about whats happening here? I'm very happy with ubuntu, just frustrated with the disconnects. I have tried a second dsl-302g so it's not the router and the internal network works flawlessly just the internet connection is screwy. Cheers Haldor

Local Linux training

Hi all, My name is Eric, I've been following this list for about two years now but haven't had occasion to actually make a post until now... I've been looking for a training institute which offers a course towards the CompTIA Linux+ certificate. I was offered a scholarship in Auckland for such a course, but I'm really looking for somewhere in Hamilton. My experience with Linux is minimal - I've installed a few older versions of Mandrake in the past, and more recently got most of a server going with Ubuntu. But I still honestly don't really know what I'm doing, and most of the time I rely on programs which feature a GUI. I'd like to get away from that. I've called Hamilton Business School (http://www.hbsc.co.nz/index.asp?PageID=2145824273) who seem to be the only ones in Hamilton offering the course, but their Linux tutor has recently left the company and so they're not offering the course at the moment. Does anyone know of a Hamilton training provider where I could do something along the lines of a 20-week course via Student Loan? Thanks in advance, - Eric Light

Squid content admin tool

Folks, I'm just being lazy here and not looking it up myself. Can anyone tell me a good squid admin tool that allows to alter whitelisted and blacklisted URLs by user/group? I can just alter the config files I know but it'd be nice to have a web front end to it. Would be cool if it has reporting too but that's not a major.
