Distrowatch review of Ubuntu MATE and Budgie 18.04

This week's Distrowatch features Ubuntu MATE and Budgie for review. Not the usual reviewer and somewhat longer than most of the weekly distro reviews. Some faults found with the MATE version and to a lesser extent with Budgie. The laptop in use for testing only had 2GiB of RAM however which might account for some of the problems encountered. 4 GiB seems to be a bare minimum these days.

Hi All, Regarding Ian Young's mention of a Distro Watch review of Mate / Budgie, the link is... https://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20180730 My two cents on Ubuntu Mate 18.04.00 is that 2GB's of RAM is insufficient to run it in, and before long you'll be hung while you wait for swapping to finish. However this may because its release coincides with Firefox / Chrome / Youtube, etc. tending to hog more memory. Also in upgrading Ubuntu Mate, then the default for the system panel may change from having "Applications, Places and System" to "Menu". To go back to the "Applications, Places and System". Goto: Control Panel --> Mate Tweak --> Panels. Change in the drop down menu from "Familiar" to "Traditional". cheers, Ian.
