I think we'll be there at the meeting - but... where is it? {and is there anyone I should RSVP to? It's been *a while*} Cheers, - Eric On Mon, May 16, 2011 at 12:00, <wlug-request(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> wrote:

Hi there
Just came across the following post on slashdot about a stolen laptop and how it was rescued:
http://tech.slashdot.org/story/11/05/14/1550217/OReilly-Authors-Laptop-Rescu...
The article mentions the "Prey" project, an open-source anti-theft software (licensed under GPL3; runs on Linux/Mac/Windows/Android): http://preyproject.com/
Has anybody used Prey before or any other "laptop-tracking" software?

I have it installed on every computer we have. I haven't needed to "use" it yet though.
I've heard several stories where cops weren't interested in pursuing/didn't believe the evidence it presents too. OTOH I've also heard stories where the cops thought it was fantastic to have a quick positive outcome.
