I think we'll be there at the meeting - but... where is it?
{and is there anyone I should RSVP to? It's been a while}
Cheers,

Hi there
Just came across the following post on slashdot about a stolen laptop
and how it was rescued:
http://tech.slashdot.org/story/11/05/14/1550217/OReilly-Authors-Laptop-Rescued-By-Twitter-Posse-and-Prey
The article mentions the "Prey" project, an open-source anti-theft
software (licensed under GPL3; runs on Linux/Mac/Windows/Android):
http://preyproject.com/
Has anybody used Prey before or any other "laptop-tracking" software?
Cheers, Peter

I have it installed on every computer we have. I haven't needed to "use" it
yet though.
I've heard several stories where cops weren't interested in pursuing/didn't
believe the evidence it presents too. OTOH I've also heard stories where the
cops thought it was fantastic to have a quick positive outcome.

I have prey installed on my cell phone, but have never tested it. Really
should get around to putting on my laptop too, should also encrypt the
drive. Nice example of how to do free software as a service

I tested it and found it quite unreliable (I mark the phone missing on the
website and nothing happens, I change the SIM and nothing happens) so I
installed wheresmydroid alongside. Between the two of them I hope I could
recover my phone if it was ever stolen.
