I hate Ubuntu, but my mother-in-law loves it

If you're old-fashioned and want Gnome 2 feel back in 12.04, these tips might help you: - Classic desktop (taken from above article): sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback and choose "Gnome 2 classic/fallback" when logging in - Window buttons on the right (http://alexsleat.co.uk/2012/04/11/ubuntu-12-04-moving-the-windows-buttons-ba...): gconftool -s /apps/met>gconftool -s /apps/met>gconftool -s /apps/metacity/general/button_layout -t string menu:minimize, maximize, close - Can't change panel settings with a right-click anymore? Hold down ALT as well (http://askubuntu.com/questions/125891/panel-settings-not-appearing-on-right-...). - changing global font size (formerly dpi settings in appearance/fonts dialog) http://askubuntu.com/questions/60044/how-do-i-change-the-font-dpi-settings Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174

I wonder how many people are using Unity/Gnome 3/Gnome 2 in the later releases of Linux distros? I myself ditched Unitiy after about 5 mins, tried Gnome 3, also ditched it, but then a year or so later tried Gnome 3.2 forced myself to use it for a month to give it a real shot. And now I am very happy with Gnome3 UI and can't imagine going back to gnome 2. I am a long time linux user since redhat 5.2 days, a geek at heart, definately not the gnome 3/unity target users. But I have a friend whom I have had running ubuntu and gnome 2 for several years, at least 4. He is the target audience for the unity/gnome 3 desktops, only does email and web surfing, has no computer knowledge to speak of and does not want any. So gnome 3/ unity should be a great fit for him, but he hates it and I had to send him back to gnome 2. So I am curious, how many geek types use the new ui's and how many hate them after a real attempt to use them? On Mon, Apr 30, 2012 at 8:14 AM, Peter Reutemann <fracpete(a)waikato.ac.nz>wrote:

I don't know if I qualify for the moniker "geek type"! Personally, I tend to "go with the flow". Life's too short to worry about trying to make your OS do what previous ones did. Perhaps my attitude is a result of changing OS every 6 months and not wanting to spend time tweaking. I see some improvements in the latest version of Unity ... the right-click options. I've got no problem recommending Ubuntu for anyone who wants a "no fuss" computer system. It works well for those that class themselves as technophobes. Michael

Hi.
From a business point of view I with the haters. The life cycle is to short and the changes are to radical. I'll be looking at the new LTS version that now has 5 year life cycle, but I'm still skeptical of Ubuntu in Enterprise environment.

I've been using unity since Ubuntu 11.04 or thereabouts, both at home and at work (dual/triple head displays). I have had very few problems with Unity that didn't end up being transient issues with legacy gnome/gconf settings (eg, a new homedir fixed it). If you think the target audience for unity and gnome 3 is people who do email/web surfing and have no computer knowledge, then I'm definitely not the target. That said, the only apps I tend to use are firefox, thunderbird, virtualbox, skype, banshee, and about 8000 instances of gnome-terminal :) Unity doesn't get in the way of my workflow in any way, so I have no problems with it.
