Basically my problem is this: I have an academic who is running win2k. He also has just purchased a scientific program that runs in linux. However he also does not want to have to dual-boot or purchase anthing more. Thinking along these lines as far as both he and I could remember, mandrake allowed you to create an image that you could load to from within windows and was doing a lot of marketing on this ability a while back. I haven't seen anything more about this on their site, so I don't know about this anymore. In the end I just need to know if it can be done with any of the distros rather than a VM of some sort. I have a question as a follow on from my mandrake one... Is there any distro that can be installed into an image within windows and then run like an emulator I guess. Ie run it and it opens up the image of a linux drive from within windows, you have your filesystem/partitions created etc. all within the image. Hope this makes sense. Cheers... david

Hi guys, I ran the yoper installation disk last night.... it's not to bad. But I can't seem to get the sound card to work .... it says its not configured. how do you configure it? graphics speed

Hi, I have a scientific visualisation app (cgui from http://www.bioeng.auckland.ac.nz ) that I have tested on 3 different machines and I have found that the graphics performance is opposite to what I expected. I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers about how to figure out what might be causing the slowness on 2 of the machines. The machines are: 1. Compaq Presario 2100 series laptop. Athlon XP 2400, 512Mb Ram, Ati Radeon IGP320M. The accelerated features of this graphics chipset are not supported by XFree86. 2. PC with AMD Duron 900 + Matrox GA400 graphics adpator. 3. PC with Athon XP 1800, running Xvnc 3.3.6. Viewed across 100 Mbit ethernet from vncviewer on Windows. The thing that is confusing me is that when viewing a shaded bezier surface the best performance is on machine 3 - using vnc. I would have expected machine 1 at least to have equivalent performance to machine 3 given that the rendering is being done in software in both cases. But it is noticably a lot slower on machine 1, any ideas why that might be? I haven't done any framerate measurements, the "test" I used was to load a human torso model and rotate it with the mouse. Machine 2 was the slowest at this task, so apparently there is no hardware support for shading in the mga driver or the driver doesn't like my hardware. Information on printing to X-Terminals

You can mount a Linux filesystem from a file (image) (indeed, most boot floppies do so); and there's a program called loadlin.exe which can be started in DOS mode with some shortcut-fiddling. mandrake as an image within windows

hi everyone. i always understood that mandrake could be installed as an image within a windows partition (not that its the most ideal way but i have someone who needs this sort of thing for preference), and could be launched from win. does this still hold true? am i hallucinating? need slapping? or is there another distro that does this? any help appreciated. cheers... AGM tonight

Hi everyone, A number of people have emailled me privately saying they are new users and they're intereted in the LUG. I hope you're all on this list. Regarding the AGM tonight, there won't be any presentation as such, nor will there be any set time for dealing with peoples Linux problems. However there will be a lot of people there that you might want to come along and meet, no doubt there'll be a couple of computers up that you can have a play with and we'd like to encourage as many people as possible to come along and join the society. So while there will be a couple of issues that you're unaware of, hopefully you'll get an idea of what the society is like, and might even like to consider getting involved.
