Dapper distro (64bit)

Hi All, I successfully downloaded and installed the new Ubuntu Dapper and have so far managed to get some of my media(Mpeg and wmv) to work plus flash player. However when I try to play a DVD it suggests I may not have permission. In properties it is a root only file so how do I change this please? Regards John

Hello, I tried upgrading Kubuntu Breezy to Dapper using the "alternative CD" It didn't work particulary well and so I looked at kubuntu.org for information on what to do. The upshot is, in the words of the website, that I have "hosed" my Kubuntu install. Naturally enough I didn't do a backup before had because everything that I had done with Kubuntu in the past had worked fine. I have Suse10 installed on other partitions and I can happily see my kubuntu partitions so the file systems aren't corrupt, its just that Kubuntu won't boot anymore. I'll happily resign myself to a fresh install of Kubuntu Dapper except the only data I don't know how to retrieve is information stored in my phpwiki that relies on MySQL for the content storage. I'd forgotten I had it on my machine but now that I have remembered it I'd really like it back. Is my data recoverable from MySQL? I don't mind if I have to cut and paste everything back into the wiki. It doesn' contain heaps of data but it does contain some techobabble gems and I would like to recover them if possible. Is it doomed?

Soundcards

Hello, I was wondering if people might care to comment on their experiences with soundcards and linux support. I have a Pentium III Coppermine on a motherboard with an onboard sound card. lspci> Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 21) To date the sound card has worked fine playing ogg files and mp3's. However, where it seems to struggle is with programs like Skype and Openwengo, two VOIP applications. I believe it has something to do with operating in full duplex ie it can't record and play at the same time (I don't have Windows to test this theory) and/or the state of Alsa support for the card is such hardware mixing (which I don't think the card supports) is the only viable option for using these programs I was wondering if people might be able to recommend a PCI sound card that is well supported by/for Linux.

Hi guys, I'm trying to update to Dapper from Kubuntu. I have updated my sources.list as root, replacing "Breezy" with "dapper". I get the following errors.... Building dependency tree... Errrm, just as a heads up... I have access to an A0 poster printer (I help maintain it). If cheap printing of banners is what you are after... OK.. My bad. It seems last time I twiddled with "dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig" I turned on "Autohinting". Bad idea. It makes things fugly. Native is a much better idea. Regards

Ubuntu documentation

There are many reasons that WLUG recommend Ubuntu as a distribution for new and experiences Linux users alike. The one I'd like to point out today is the excellent documentation that is available. http://help.ubuntu.com/ has PDF and HTML versions of guidebooks for the new 6.06 release, covering all variants (GNOME, KDE, XFCE), as well as Ubuntu Server and packaging. The documentation is available under the GNU Free Documentation License, so you can download it and print it yourself, as well as distribute it freely. A company called Lulu are making printed versions available by money-and-postage (http://www.lulu.com/ubuntu-doc) but I imagine shipping to New Zealand would be prohibitive. If enough people are interested, WLUG could investigate having some copies printed and bound, and made available to members at cost. Craig
