There's a WLUG meeting tonight: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The meeting we had planned (http://www.wlug.org.nz/MeetingTopics.2009-06-29) is being rescheduled for July. Instead we are going to have an informal social night. We will have pizza, refreshments and other treats. We will do some short presentations on using Skype on a Linux box, and provide answers to any questions you might have about Linux or Free/Open Source Software. A couple people will be hacking a wireless Internet Access Point using a LightWire account. If they are successful there will be free Internet access. We might talk about preparations for SoftwareFreedomDay. 7:30pm MS4.G.02 (http://www.waikato.ac.nz/contacts/map?MS4) (zcat notes that 'skype' is non-free software, and volunteered to demo ekiga as well)

decent, independent statistics for New Zealand internet users?

Does anyone know whether there is anyone producing decent statistics of New Zealand internet users? I'm aware that the area is fraught, I'm really just looking for an analysis from someone that can at least spell "vested interest" and "self-selected sample." Ideally the statistics would include things like: 1) OS / browser used 2) bandwidth of connection 3) use of English/Maori and/or ethnicity 4) social networking sites used The best I've found so far is: http://www.aut.ac.nz/research/research-institutes/icdc/projects/world-inter… which has good coverage of (2) and the ethnicity aspects of (3). I've also got our own google analytics stats with >a million "unique users", but this these seem to be pretty much contaminated by the fact that _lots_ of our users access our site from school. cheers stuart

Hi folk I am also from rural Morrinsville and am looking to switch completely to Linux as soon as possible. As an older guy I get tired eyes looking at a sreen too much so was looking for some base literature to read on Linux structures, protocols etc. to get my mind in the grove. I used to write software a lot and am familiar with DOS which I guess is getting quiet obsolete. Am intending to be at the Social night on Monday so wonder if some of the library could be available. Hi Wlug, I represent two Linux newbies in Morrinsville. We have Ubuntu and Open Suse going but no modem and a trial version of Xandros going on another machine with no modem problems. In the medium term I want to get a C IDE like Ajuta going to do some C programming. Does anyone want to do some handholding for us by email? New It Make! Community Radio show

I've been working on a radio show over at: http://communityradio.co.nz/ It's starting today, the other month when Walter McGinnis was here, he and Mark Caunter from the Library were kind enough to help put together the first episode. We talk about Kete, which was also mentioned on Stuff yesterday: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/education/2487819/Global-interest-in-NZ-wik… I put a plug for WLUG in, and I plan to do a couple episodes in the future mainly on FOSS.
