Agenda Discussion of Software Freedom Day Success: *A manageable turnout *USB stick draw worked well. *Music applications/ setups are popular. *Presentations format worked well. *The posters and advertising had created manageable expectations. *A public figure is a draw card (Nandoor Tanzcos) *Experienced presenters held audience attention. *The fliers and promotional materials were excellent. *News paper recognition. *EEE PC is popular. Things we learned *A resources page/board for those interested in future information. *The value of having someone welcoming people to the event. *The value of having the internet available. *Perhaps a notice board/ white board for any rescheduling issues. *Perhaps some configuration work could have been done earlier *Wireless AND wired access is useful to those wishing to hook up laptops. Number one trouble shooting with laptops is wireless issues so wired access is a prerequisite for troubleshooting some issues. *Have a session demonstrating the OpenDisc (on a windows computer), highlighting the programs on it. Thing we could do better or ideas for discussion *Maybe a local ubuntu respository for any install work to avoid hammering the internet connection. (might also save embarrassment when doing how to install) *Windows machines demonstrating the true cross platform nature of many free software projects *Demonstrating MythTV showing maturity of application. E-Waste Day...

Is anyone here from the central Hamilton West area? I /did/ have someone to take a small load (two monitors, a few PSUs and a few other small bits and pieces), but he won't be in Hamilton tomorrow. This is probably rather late notice, but then I didn't have much notice of changes of plan. If I can't get rid of any of this stuff now, where can I dispose of it later? I've no idea. Sandy

We'll have the usual tables, power, various ISO's, Internet, coffee and light lunch, etc.

It would be pretty tragic if someone dropped off a 'poly' or similar rare, historic machine and nobody saved it. Anyhow, volunteer information at http://zcat.geek.nz/files/volunteers%208.30%20packers.doc for anybody who plans to help out on the day. Hopefully the list allows attachments. Also I think I've got too much here to fit in my car, let me know if you have some free space and can pass by this way on Sunday morning.

Announcement: Special General Meeting

Hi all. This is to formally announce the intention of the committee to hold a Special General Meeting 15 minutes prior to the AGM (7:15 pm). The topic on the table for this meeting is the motion: "That the charter be amended to allow former paid members of the Waikato Linux Users Group to vote at an AGM of the WLUG with the proviso that their subscription be renewed at or before the AGM." Your support of the event and attendance would be greatly appreciated. eDay is a drive-through recycling event which gives New Zealand households and community organisations the opportunity to recycle old computers and mobile phones in an environmentally sustainable way. eDay will be held in 30 locations across the country, from Invercargill to Kaitaia, on the 4^th and 5^th of October. // eDay in Hamilton will take place on Sunday 5^th October* *2008 from 9am -- 3pm. You are most welcome to attend at any time during the day as a volunteer. The eDay venue details are as follows: Mainfreight Depot Foreman Rd (off Avalon Dr) Hamilton** * * *Who is attending eDay in Hamilton* § eDay sponsors and stakeholders such as Hamilton City Council Voulnteers, Velocity Networks, Easy Technology and Waikato 2020 Communications Trust § Local media will be invited § Local community disposing of their e-waste; we are expecting up to 800 cars and households to drop-off e-waste. eDay was created by the Computer Access New Zealand Trust (CANZ) in response to a growing concern about the volume of electronic waste (e-waste), especially computers and computer monitors, being dumped in New Zealand landfills. e-waste can seriously harm the environment, wildlife and human health when dumped in landfills. Landfilling e-waste is not a solution because it stores potentially toxic waste rather than allowing for recovery and reuse of valuable materials. eDay aims to increase community awareness of the hazardous nature of electronic equipment, making it clear that disposal in landfills is not a sustainable option. While we expect alphas to include a fair number of bugs, and rely on your continued support and testing to help resolve these bugs for Ubuntu releases, bugs that damage hardware are quite another matter. As a result of this bug we must recommend that users do *not* use Intrepid alphas, including the LiveCDs, on machines with Intel GigE ethernet. Efforts to safeguard the hardware of affected users are ongoing, though initially this will consist of a workaround in the form of disabling the e1000e driver. Alpha 6 CD images will not be re-issued for this fix, so affected users are advised to either use daily CD images once a resolution is in place, or to wait for the release of the 8.10 beta, due to be released on October 2.
