WLUG / NZOSS support for DSE Hamilton Powerhouse Computer Weekend

Thanks to all who offered to attend and assist with this. For those who asked about timetables, we would like to have people present to offer advise and demonstrate OSS/Linux between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th July. As it is difficult to make extra space, we will need to use the computers on display in the store which will mean using Knoppix or similar distro which runs from CD. We will be giving away free Open Office.org and Knoppix CDs to customers who attend. We will be advertising this event in the newspaper and it would be good to include your logos if possible, please advise on this or send to me off-list. We also have facilities to photocopy A4 DLE type brochures if you provide me with a PDF or OO.o doc of your brochure we can produce them for you. Regards, Ross. Ross Hamblin DSE (NZ) Ltd.

Before getting in touch with the DSE guy..

Knoppix, being built on Debian, has never had "looks nice" as a strong point. Matt's WLUG Knoppix fixed it at least a little by using truetype fonts, but it's not exactly nice. Would I be right in assuming that MandrakeMove was probably the best? If not, what else would we want to show off in a situation where first impressions mean everything? http://www.distrowatch.com/?newsid=01674#0 links Basilisk Linux, a live CD based on Fedora Core 2: it seems like it's KDE though, I of course would like to see one based on GNOME. Despite what Ross said about in-store machines and space, I think someone should take a laptop with something running from hdd, rather than only having (slow) live cds. Can't be me though, my only laptop runs at 266MHz, and the LCD sometimes decides it would rather show only a white screen.... John

As one of those who said I will help as rewuired, will the lug roster people on, and handle this, or will we just "play it by ear" I strongly recommend the former. as it is vital to be professional here. maybe up to 3 at any one time ? Also is there an official shirt to wear. My wife make a cool tux embroiderd on a shirt, I can ask here if she would like to do a few to help out. Say a polo shirt from the warehouse with a simple tux on the left hand side. Does this interest anyone. Craig Box wrote:
