
Hmm, perhaps I should clarify this. Could still boot original install of Debian. cp /etc/* /mnt/hdb1/etc/ (with recursion option on -r or -R ...I forget) ^^^^win98 install with spare space. Re-install - everything on ext2 partitions. cp -f /mnt/hdb1/etc/* /etc/ problems begin... --- I have been thinking since my initial post. Another re-install will be the least troublesome way to remedy this. I was hoping to fix it the tricky way but that doesn't seem to have served well so far. :-) Oh well, a lesson learned. Fortunately I found a utility (now where did I put that...) to read ext2 partitions from windows so all that apt-get over modem is not wasted. Seeya, Paul. ---

Question: Why on earth did you have your /etc on a FAT partition in the first place???
