meetup.com: members will pay soon

Hi everyone Came across this news item from meetup.com: https://www.meetup.com/lp/paymentchanges Members will soon get charged USD 2 per month for using meetup.com. So far, it was only the organizers that had to cough up money. The idea is to lower costs for organizers and ensure that people RSVPing actually show up. I'll put this as topic for the upcoming AGM. In the meantime, we should start looking for alternatives. E.g.: https://alternativeto.net/software/meetup/ Personally, I like GetTogether (https://gettogether.community/). Just to note it actually says: Members will pay a $2 fee when they reserve a spot at your event. In other words, it seems they only pay when they say they’ll be there. If some of the money actually went to the organizer, that might be a Good Thing... Another news item: <https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/10/15/meetup_fee_increase_backlash/>.

This. If I knew that at least 80% of the coins were going to the organisers then I'd have no issue in paying a $2 fee, as most meetups are catered and some require hosting costs. Knowing that the $2 is solely for WeWork's site is making people look at other options. The other issue (at least in the Auckland meetups I've been too) is that 50+ people will RSVP, but only 20 or so will attend. -- Simon

I remember a colleague at Waikato University who ran training courses for staff. He would charge a booking fee, which would be refunded on actual attendance.
