Hi All, Is there a simple way for me to access my brothers windows vista computer in Wanganui from my Ubuntu box? I have access to his internet account and can get my sis in law to change the windows permissions if need be... Regards John..

My sister uses "Hamachi", a closed-source zero-config VPN software: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamachi There seems to be also a similar open-source software available, called "Wippien": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wippien Both run on Windows and Linux, apparently. Maybe worth a shot? NB: I haven't used any of these tools. Personally, I would have installed cygwin with an openssh server on the Windows box and configured a no-ip.org client to get around the constantly changing IP address. But that involves quite a bit of work... Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Waikato, NZ http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ Ph. +64 (7) 858-5174

I haven't tested properly, but ... Install tightvnc ( http://www.tightvnc.com/ ) on the Windows box, vinagre on the Ubuntu box and Bob's your uncle! It seems to work quite well. Michael

that's the easy part. Finding your way around NAT and dynamic IP addresses makes things quite a lot harder. I'm using http://www.dyndns.com/ to find my home network when I'm out, and you'll find useful advice and tools for port forwarding on http://portforward.com/ -- Disclaimer: By sending an email to any of my addresses you are agreeing that: 1. www.logmein.com will work and you wont need to mess about with dynamic ip's and NAT. Just wondering if anyone has an old 64Mb or 128Mb SDRAM SODIMM kicking around that they would like to donate / sell. I'm fixing up a laptop for a friends kid and it could really do with a bit more ram but don't really want to deal with the cost and hassle of getting legacy memory from a retailer. Any help will be appreciated Thanks Jason

I got a bit busy for a few days and have only just had a chance to pull the laptop apart. Turns out that it already has 128Mb in it, it just needed reseating so thanks to all who offered help and sorry if I put you to any trouble Cheers Jason
