Unlike the uniform dpkg+apt system in the Debian world, RPM-based distros have adopted a variety of approaches to add automatic management of dependencies on top of the basic functionality of the rpm tool itself: Red Hat originally developed Yum, which they have replaced with DNF; SuSE created Zypper, but before these, Mandrake had urpmi. Now Mageia (the successor to Mandrake) has also adopted Red Hat’s DNF <http://phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Megia-6-To-Have-DNF-Yum> as an alternative to urpmi. There are some interesting comments in the associated discussion by a Mageia developer with the handle “King InuYasha”, who did an evaluation of DNF versus Zypper before deciding to adopt the former.
