Re: [wlug] Making Wireless go faster.

Regarding metal objects that may impede the signal: I thought of wrapping an empty toilet roll (or similar) with aluminium foil then adjusting the size to act as a collector/reflector and maybe getting some signal gain if placed in a strategic location. As this been tested or did I have a bad idea?? Regards John

Bad idea as will be worse than free space unless you actually have power there and repeat signal in which case you should use a slightly better aerial design. Ian

Tinfoil is no good (except for hats). Everyone knows that you should use kitchen-ware for your wifi. See http://www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/ and http://bloodnok.coders.net/pic/dish/ John

John You can actually point your wifi sort of like that and it does help the signal. I have seen tests done a couple of years ago where people put a foil shield on (for example) the south side of their wifi antenna to point the signal north. It did infact reduce the signal south of the router and improved it to the north. Can be very helpfull in increasing reception in your house and preventing it spilling onto the street. I should clarify my original post - I agree that modifying aerials can make an improvement. I had thought the question was about sticking something in the middle.. Ian

I have a very good signal according to NetworkManager. The single is almost always at 100% and the AP is only about 10 feet away. I'd be pretty disappointed if the single strength was the problem. As for using a toilet roll covered in tinfoil as an antenna. Well I've heard other suitably off the wall suggestions. Supposedly putting a CD-ROM at the base of the antenna can help, so can using a Pringles can. Never tried any of this stuff myself. Supposedly useful for War-Driving. Google is your friend.
