This should be an interesting event; fixing bugs in ubuntu at the Ubuntu global jam. Fri, 26 Aug. 2016 01:00 - Sun, 28 Aug. 2016 13:45 UTC I have zero experience in fixing bugs in ubuntu but it would be a great learning experience. Do wlug members want to form a team? http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/global/3418/ -- Kind Regards Rowan Schischka

I cant say I know much about bug-jams / hackfests / hackathons, but I suggest we discuss the idea of participating in the Ubuntu Global Jam (weekend of 27-28 August and weekend of 24-25 September), at next Monday's wlug meeting. While on the this subject, you may have seen in the news that in Australia the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) are having some problems with their on-line census. It appears that a recent hack-a-thon may have produced a more viable solution... "One of the fundamental problems with the 2016 online census was the architecture. Not the building the ABS works in, but the way the computer system built to handle millions of Australians was designed. Turns out two uni students designed a better way to do it in just 54 hours on the weekend - at a cost of just $500. ... The ABS proposed and tested their site for 1 million per hour. The magic "260 submissions per second" they keep banging on about. ... On the weekend "Make Census Great Again" was load tested to 4 million page views per hour. And 10,000 submissions per second - insane numbers." http://eftm.com.au/2016/08/how-two-uni-students-built-a-better-census-site-i... cheers, Ian. ________________________________ From: wlug-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz <wlug-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> on behalf of rowan schischka <rowanschischka(a)gmail.com> Sent: Thursday, 18 August 2016 11:00 a.m. To: wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz Subject: [wlug] ubuntu global jam This should be an interesting event; fixing bugs in ubuntu at the Ubuntu global jam. I would be interest, but more so for Debian or python (especially Nikola related libraries). Also I always work alone on my own at these types of events.
More hands on workshops/sprints with wlug would be great to see. Apug has two meetups a month - speaker and workshop. I would be very interested in a monthly workshop similar to Apug. Cheers, William.
