oldest usable Android version -- any opinions?

Apologies for straying off topic. I need to get an Android phone to replace an ancient Sony-E, but hanker somewhat for the days of removable batteries, and like a stylus. This points afaict to an older Samsung Note model but then comes the problem of obsolete versions of Android. Can anyone suggest what is the oldest Android that can still be used on the web of today? Or perhaps there is a current phone with removable battery? ~ Ian Y

Hi Ian! The oldest version I'd consider using is 7.1.2, with a patch level of 5 Oct 2017. ;-) I've got an old-ish Samsung Galaxy S5, running the latest version of LineageOS. You can find refurbs on TradeMe for about $230, or you might find a new one for a similar price. It has a removable battery, but not a stylus. They maintain builds for most of the Samsung Galaxy Note line as well, though. I hand-on-heart would never purchase a phone that doesn't run LineageOS. Nobody - not even Google - provide security updates for as long as them. In fact, they still produce builds for the Galaxy 2, which is unbelievable. :) Compatible devices are listed here: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/ E -------------------------------------------- Q: Why is this email five sentences or less?
