I think the point is being missed here. This is a LUG. It's all good & fine to keep XP around for legacy reasons, either in a VM or as a dual boot option, but there are numerous licensing pit-fall's involved. Focus on the (g)Linux (please) If you want a windoze OS, the simplest is really to go to TradeMe, and get an old busted machine. Use the rest for spares, or another home linux server (IPCop firewall? mythbuntu? torrentflux? NAS/RAS?). That way windows will basically cost you the price of shipping. (or you can be sneaky & try to lay your hands on a MSDN version; 2k is still the best) Any other option option, you simply spinning your wheels & creating more problems in the long run. I've tries to get an old XP licence from users that have 'upgraded' to vista; good luck with that one - Jaco _________________________________________________________________ It’s time to join the family - Get the next generation of Free Windows Live Services now! http://get.live.com/

Which is still probably a violation of the license. Which was the point of the entire thread. (It's also recommended that Free Software advocates avoid derogatory terms like 'Windoze' - see also http://www.wlug.org.nz/archive/mailing-list-aup.txt) Toronto has a project called TorCamp, a variation of the BarCamp theme, which is basically a mailing list for techies. I've always thought NZ needed something similar, so you could talk about Windows without offending people! Craig

It wasn't my intention to ignite a holy war. Hence why I prefaced my topic with [OT] however, I don't know if the actual Subjects are displayed in Digest mode of the mailing list so you may have not been aware of this flag. I am aware of the fact that this is a LUG mailing list. However, there is a rather diverse group of people who read this list. Many of whom work with a wide variety of OS's for various reasons. I have gotten a lot of assistance on many topics from people on this list and within WLUG so I thought this list would be a good please to ask. I don't believe that zealotry is a good thing. I'm all for promoting a cause but there are tasks for which Linux is the best choice and tasks for which Windows is the best choice and tasks for which a Mac is the best choice and tasks for which a PC is the best choice. Do we really need the "My OS is better than your OS" rubbish? It doesn't help the promotion of Linux and FOSS. All it does is close the minds of the people you wish to reach. J
