I've suddenly noticed that I'm unable to switch between workspaces. Neither clicking on the workspace applet nor Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right arrow work any more, and I'm at a loss as to why this might be. I can still send windows to another workspace, but I can no longer get to them. Would anyone have any ideas about why this is happening? This is 11.04 x64.

No problem on my laptop - both methods work ... Acer Aspire 4315, 11.04 x64, Unity UI Michael

I'm using GNOME; I couldn't stand Unity, though I might give it another chance when 11.10 is released. I missed having my sensor indicators (HDD/CPU temperatures) in my top panel. Saying that you don't have a problem isn't particularly helpful, either. My workspace switchers /used/ to work, but now they don't for no reason I can figure out, which is why I'm asking here. A Google search reveals that the issue has cropped up with other people, but the only fix I've so far found didn't do anything. Sandy On 17/09/11 18:57, Michael McDonald wrote:

It might allow you to eliminate the factors we have in common as being the cause. You've already hinted at one difference ... Gnome 3 vs Unity. Is the problem confined to Gnome 3 or does it affect Unity users too? Has the bug been reported in Launchpad? I try not to lose too much sleep over problems. If I can fix it, I will. If not, I either live with it and wait until the next release or try something else. Have had an interesting time over the lifetime of this laptop with wireless! Used other distros until Ubuntu worked "out of the box" with my wireless. I've got a few puzzles to sort out - some of which may never get solved because it's much easier to work around the problem. (An interesting one at the moment is that Windows XP running in a virtual machine in Windows 7 can't "see" a printer on the local network ... the local network is 192.168.1.xxx, and the virtual XP IP address is 192.168.yyy.xxx (forgotten the actual numbers, but yyy is >100). XP has no problems seeing the network on the other side of the router/modem!). In the past (as far as I remember!) I've noted similar problems with VirtualBox (Linux within Linux) but never worked out how to communicate with a virtual machine over the local network. Cheers and happy bug-hunting Michael

I noticed a problem switching between workspaces recently. I turned off the 3d effects (compiz > metacity, about the first thing I tried) and I can switch workspaces again. I haven't tried turning the effects back on again yet. On 17 September 2011 21:17, Michael McDonald <mikencolleen(a)gmail.com> wrote:

And on setting it back to compiz I see that it's working again. weird. Other things I had tried; restarting the desktop, and checking that the screen switching buttons hadn't been turned off in compizconfig On 18 September 2011 08:34, Bruce Kingsbury <zcat(a)zcat.geek.nz> wrote:

I'm actually using GNOME 2.32.1 -- I believe GNOME 3 won't be default until 11.10 is released. Following Bruce's suggestion to switch back to Metacity works (I installed fusion-icon), but switching back to Compiz still shows that it's impossible to switch between workspaces. At least I have a work-around now. Sandy On 17/09/11 21:17, Michael McDonald wrote:

Desktop switching is provided by one of the plugins for compiz, so it's possible that this plugin is somehow turned off or reconfigured now. Try installing simple-ccsm and running it (shows up as CompizConfig Settings Manager in the System Preferences menu) and looking through the plugins to see what's there. By default (I think), the "Desktop Wall" plugin handles switching between viewports. Maybe this has been disabled, or another plugin has taken over.

Aha! It /was/ the Desktop Wall plugin. It had been turned off for some reason. I'd never have thought of that; it's not exactly the most obvious thing to look under for workspace switching. :p Thanks for that nugget of info! Sandy On 19/09/11 03:03, Daniel Lawson wrote:
