I am using KMail as my mail client, however, I have to use Windows for one program and have access to the e-mail messages at the same time. I haven't been able to find a program who can do this. Do you know of one? Would it work if I'd use Thunderbird? Of course then there is the problem that the KMail files are on a Reiser partition, but that could probably be solved by moving the files and using a simlink. Thanks Felix

Couple of problems here 1) I have no idea what format KMail stores it's folders in but it's not likely to be something that Thunderbird can read. 2) Even if thunderbird is able to read a KMail mailbox I don't know of any way to mount a reiser partition from windows. I would suggest that the best, easiest and quickest way to solve your problem is to use an IMAP server to store all your mail on, and have KMail (in linux) and Thunderbird (in windows) use the same IMAP server. Alternatively if IMAP is not an option for you, and you know how to mount a resier partition in windows then I would suggest using KMail in linux and windows as you are much more likely to have success when using the same mail client. Ups, some misunderstandings here, sorry. Let's clarify. I was thinking of changing the mail client to Thunderbird in Linux and use it instead of KMail. There is a software that allows to access a Reiser partition from Windows (haven't tried it yet). However, I thought I would store the mail file on the Windows partition. I don't know anything about IMAP servers, so need to read up on them. Currently the mail comes in from Xtra on a local mail server (Windows based) and it is getting distributed to the different family members. Thanks Felix On Wed, 06 Oct 2004 17:16, Matt Brown wrote:

OK.

Depending on what filesystem the windows partition is this scheme may work. Linux can read/write FAT filesystems OK, but while there is some basic support for NTFS file systems in linux it doesn't seem to be very reliable especially for write support. If you are careful and your partition types are correct then you can probably get Thunderbird in linux to access the Thunderbird mail store on our windows partition. I would still recommend IMAP however :)

OK. IMAP is an excellent protocol that stores all your mail on the server from where it is downloaded by your client when it needs it. This makes it really easy to access your mail from multiple locations - be that windows/linux on the same computer, or even from somewhere around the world!. It does take some setting up, in that you would need a linux server to run it off, but the benefits are well worth the effort in my opinion. There are also several members of WLUG who can provide mail hosting services (which I personally use) if you want the benefits of IMAP but can't/don't want to run an IMAP server yourself.
