Hi Ron, Should be no problem but be aware of Liteon stuff as I knew some guys has problem with that brands (but that's hardware incompatibility issue rather than Linux). My suggestion would be NEC3500A, that pretty good and it does work on linux (ubuntu) Nigel On Sat, 25 Dec 2004 15:47:41 +1300, Ron Dean <rvdean(a)ihug.co.nz> wrote:

I recently bought a Samsung DVD - CD everything. Booted up and have not had to configure anything. Enjoy using k3b heaps. -- Regards SnapafunFrank Big or small, a challenge requires the same commitment to resolve. Registered Linux User # 324213

Brand shouldn't matter at all with Linux compatibility. All CD/DVD writers are usually ATAPI or SCSI devices. Kernel 2.6.x has much better support for ATAPI devices than 2.4.x (which required SCSI emulation for devices to work). SCSI support has always been quite good. Although another poster warned you away from Liteon drives I've heard good things about them. Personally I've used Richo, Sony, Creative, Asus, and A-Open drives in Linux with little trouble. One brand I would suggest you avoid is Diamond Data (Mitsubishi). I had lots of problems with one of their drives a few years ago. In Windows and Linux. Just crap hardware. Of the CD-Writing apps I've used K3B seems to be the best from an ease of use perspective. Regards On Sat, 2004-12-25 at 15:47 +1300, Ron Dean wrote:
