Dick Smith Acer Aspire 5315 NoteBook

Has anybody had experience in setting this up with Ubuntu 8.04 The full Model Number is AS5315-201G08Mi I am thinking of buying one . I found on the web information about Aspire 5315 that it could be got to work but when I searched with the whole model number couldn't find any information. -- Ron Dean 2 Shannon Place Nawton Hamilton Ph 8493904

http://tuxmobil.org/acer.html Might be worth a look. If you're interested in that model see if you can persuade them to let you run the Ubuntu Live CD on it. If everything works that is important to you, then you're pretty safe. Chris 2008/8/15 Ron Dean <rvdean(a)ihug.co.nz>:

Everything I can find suggests that it would be fairly straightforward, although not completely automatic 'out of the box' (what is these days?) One article leads me to believe that this laptop is available with Linpus Linux preinstalled, which is a pretty strong indication that there are no major problems getting everything to work in Linux. The AR242x 802.11abg Wireless works with the madwifi drivers, although there's a chance you might have to build and install the most recent madwifi drivers from source if Ubuntu's packaged drivers haven't caught up with a recent fix. I see a lot of discussion about how to get the wireless going, and very little about the webcam, so I'm inclined to guess that the webcam works without any extra effort.
