Hi again Craig. I still cant view the http://www.wlug.org.nz/GarageSale/ site. I get a message "The operation timed out when attempting to contact www.wlug.org.nz"
While I may not be able to attend the WLUG meeting, we will be through to Hamilton from Taumarunui the last Saturday in January. We may be able to make a point of seeing you then, it that suits. Linz

We have been giving some thought to buying a SECOND HAND older computer - something like a 500mhz machine - to put a full Linux system on, if we cant get the LIVE versions I am tinkering with to operate to the point of being able to send/receive email and view the occasional website. I have had some suggestions to where I might get something, from list members, but so far what I have viewed have been beyond our currents 'means.'
I have a K6-2-500 PC that is surplus to requirements, which you can take away from the next WLUG meeting for the one off price of nothing. It will not be pretty - it will be about as quick as a P2-350 from memory.
Otherwise there are often people on this list with computers they are giving away for a song- unfortunately I've just got rid of all of mine. If you check our buy/sell/exchange page at http://www.wlug.org.nz/GarageSale/ you will see where these transactions are normally carried out. If you still can't see the web site, that's the first thing we need to fix!
If, however, you do have a bit of money to spare, one of those $850 Dell computers would give you an experience ten times better than what you'd get out of an old P2 machine. Linux would have a much better reputation if more people could/would try it on better specced machines.
Craig

Looking at a traceroute (this looks at how the traffic goes through) my method of getting there goes from Telecom ADSL to Telstra Clear to wlug. I would guess Orcon might be having problems getting traffic through - I know Telstra Clear has been in dispute with some ISPs about peering (in affect sharing) internet traffic and this may be the problem. You may wish to ring the Orcon helpdesk.... Is wlug.org.nz hosted at Waikato Uni? I have a feeling it might be looking at the traces.... Have a test of www.waikato.ac.nz and see if it breaks... I don't think that the problem will lie with Orcon, since I have no problems accessing the site. Unless Linz is on a different plan to me, perhaps (I'm on Bitstream). Ian McDonald wrote:

I wouldn't have thought the plan would make a difference at all, but if we're ascribing the problem to the ISP, that's the only difference between our connections, so it seems the logical culprit. However, I don't think myself that it's a problem with Orcon... Pretty odd whatever it is though. Judy & Lindsay Roberts wrote:

It's not hosted at Waikato Uni, but it is hosted relatively close in terms of IP space. www.wlug.org.nz has IPv6 DNS (AAAA) records published for it. www2.wlug.org.nz does not. Generally, if you can't get to www.wlug.org.nz but you can get to www2.wlug.org.nz, it means you have IPv6 enabled on your computer, but not configured correctly, and your browser doesn't fall back gracefully. Another alternative is that you are being transproxied by a server with poorly configured IPv6 addressing. ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.

Nope, Hoiho (www.wlug.org.nz) is a box made from donated hardware, sitting at Craig McKenna's workplace in Hamilton, on a 2Mbit fibre pipe to Telstra Clear. Correct me if I'm wrong, Craig. www2 and www both resolve to the same host, which suggests a DNS issue. G.

No, I very much doubt it is XP causing the problem. The main difference between www.wlug.org.nz and www2.wlug.org.nz is IPv6 dns records See matt(a)argon:~$ host -t AAAA www.wlug.org.nz www.wlug.org.nz is an alias for hoiho.wlug.org.nz. hoiho.wlug.org.nz has AAAA address 2002:cb61:a32::1 matt(a)argon:~$ host -t A www.wlug.org.nz www.wlug.org.nz is an alias for hoiho.wlug.org.nz. hoiho.wlug.org.nz has address 203.97.10.50 Vs matt(a)argon:~$ host -t AAAA www2.wlug.org.nz matt(a)argon:~$ matt(a)argon:~$ host -t A www2.wlug.org.nz www2.wlug.org.nz has address 203.97.10.50 So if you can get to www2, but not www then it suggests that you are possibly having a problem with IPv6. Without knowing how your network is setup it is hard to help you fix it. Perhaps if you provided some more details regarding your network setup and your ISP I could help. Alternatively, you could just use www2 and be done with it. Regards

I'm still in Windows XP, awaiting Ubuntu to arrival by snail mail from whereever it is dispatched. So, is there an issue of XP not liking your site. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Daniel Lawson" <daniel(a)meta.net.nz> To: "Waikato Linux Users Group" <wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> Sent: Wednesday, January 05, 2005 2:32 PM Subject: Re: Fw: [wlug] [Fwd: Cheap older PC]

Sorry if you've already said this, but:
Which operating system / distribution are you using, and which version? Which browser are you using, and which version?
(just trying to see if there's an obvious reason for www.wlug.org.nz to not work for you).

Linz

We have been giving some thought to buying a SECOND HAND older computer - something like a 500mhz machine - to put a full Linux system on, if we cant get the LIVE versions I am tinkering with to operate to the point of being able to send/receive email and view
occasional website. I have had some suggestions to where I might get something, from
I can see it no probs. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy & Lindsay Roberts" <judenlinz(a)orcon.net.nz> To: <craig(a)dubculture.co.nz>; "Waikato Linux Users Group" <wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2005 5:57 PM Subject: Fw: [wlug] [Fwd: Cheap older PC] the list
members, but so far what I have viewed have been beyond our currents 'means.'
Craig

Harry, Why do think I cant log onto www.wlug.org.nz ? And at the same time, you cant see our photo on our site? Do you think there maybe a setting on my PC that is wrong and if so, what particular setting might it be? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Harry Wieldraayer" <h.wiel(a)hnpl.net> To: "Waikato Linux Users Group" <wlug(a)list.waikato.ac.nz> Sent: Wednesday, January 05, 2005 12:42 AM Subject: Re: [wlug] [Fwd: Cheap older PC]
