Freeth says councils over their heads in broadband

http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/netw/C10B222A6ACCC7F5CC25733A0003FB01 Fascinating article... ..."Specialists and enthusiasts in InternetNZ and other online debating forums have been quick to leap on Freeth’s comments as having an obvious motive; his company has a broadband cable network and DSL service of its own in Wellington and Christchurch and may simply be trying to discourage competition." .."But Melbourne-based Ovum consultant Leith Campbell says “broadly speaking [Freeth’s] right. There is a considerable ongoing operational cost to these networks. You’ve got to be prepared for troubleshooting and repair and ongoing maintenance.” Well... To put in my 10c worth, I know for a fact that two of those people at InternetNZ know what they are talking about... :)

It should also be remembered that Wgtn Council has had experience with laying and maintaining a broadband network when Citynet was first started. I imagine that they would use that company to the work since it is already developing and maintaining a fibre network around Wgtn. And of course there is "The Loop" http://www.nzine.co.nz/features/nelsonloop.html. If this group of schools and companies can do it, why can't a council also do it in a similar manner?

And they have been laying and maintaining in Auckland... Then there's Vector laying in areas that CityLink aren't laying in Auckland and Wellington...
And of course there is "The Loop" http://www.nzine.co.nz/features/nelsonloop.html.
And Counties Power laying in Pukekohe of all places... And there's Velocity Networks (Liteup)... And the list goes on.
If this group of schools and companies can do it, why can't a council also do it in a similar manner?
Exactly... Not only *can* they do it, they *are* doing it....

Yes and TelstraClear aren't doing it. Aren't doing it in mobile, aren't doing it in more cable/fibre to home. I'm wondering how much longer TelstraClear actually has to live in its current form. Ian -- Web1: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4/ Web2: http://www.jandi.co.nz Blog: http://iansblog.jandi.co.nz
