I have lived in Hamilton for 6 years, and currently live in Tamahere. Is there anyone here who would be willing to get together with me and give me a bit of a quick start. I have an old server I am trying to set up with Linux, but I am experiencing hardware issues that are beyond me. I would be willing to pay someone for his/her time if necessary. Hello Sidd, I am certainly willing to help, you can keep your $$ tho :) Perhaps, if you don't mind, you should post here? There are lots of talent folks here that could chime in on any given subject. You would certainly have a wider experienced audience to help you ;) Perhaps you can start by giving the hardware specs, the distro version and the problem you are having? Michael Sidd wrote:

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi Michael, Thanks! I need to ultimately learn how to set up a secure web server. Right now, though, the main issue I need to get through is to get this machine working. I have tried various distros and various network cards, but none of them work... Some distros detect the card the but there is no network communication. I am sure that while we work on this problem there will be a multitude of other things we can discuss and I can learn as we go along. I have tried 4 different NICs and have had no success. I tried on a production server I have here and I get it working fine, so I don't think it is a configuration problem, it is probably a hardware thing. I have tried various BIOS setting as researched from the internet with no luck as well. The machine does work under windows. The machine is an oldish ABIT-VP6 dual processor MB with 2 433/66 processors 512Mb memory. The network cards are various, one from DSE (new), one Macronix, one 3Com and I am not sure about the other. The distros I have tried are Gentoo, trustix and Engarde... Trustix and Engarde see the card(s) but don't communicate, although the lights do flash in an unusual way. Gentoo fails to detect any of the cards. Cheers, Sidd. Michael J Knox wrote:

Which means the next obvious step is to try Ubuntu :)

Ok, well.. I am not sure that trustix and or EnGrade are anymore secure than a well admin'ed server, so perhaps you should start with a more "mainstream" distro and learn from there. I would recommend CentOS/Fedora, others would probably recommend debian/ubuntu. These are fairly mainstream distros with reasonable hardware detection and support. I admin a couple of servers of both debian and CentOS base. www.howtoforge.com might give you some good pointers too :) Macronix and 3Com usually have very good support. IIRC macronix is a tulip or ne2000 clone, could be mistaken though. However, I would expect these to work. I am not sure what you mean by "lights flash in an unusual way", are you assigning them an IP ? I assume you are setting this up in a private network whilst you learn? Michael Sidd wrote:

Right, I have started the downloads for both debian and fedora on bittorrent... I guess we can continue this tomorrow :)

I will have a read tonight.

Yes, the research I have done on the net suggests I should have no problem with them, so I am stumped. There may be some obscure setting in the BIOS I am missing, but I really don't know what to look for.
I am not sure what you mean by "lights flash in an unusual way", are you assigning them an IP ?
Yes, I have done when the cards are detected. The lights don't behave as one would expect, flickering on and off, but rather stay on, and seem to "dim" momentarily and frequently.
I assume you are setting this up in a private network whilst you learn?
Yes, and as I mentioned before, I got my Intel based machine going very easily, so I am sure the gear I am using is good and my config is correct. Cheers, Sidd.

So with different NICs in the one machine you have no success? That's really odd. There is a workshop this Saturday, if you can make it to that - there should be enough support there to be able to try a Live CD or two, or possibly another network card. Craig

Thanks Craig, Can you give me a time and venue/address? Sidd. Craig Box wrote:
