I have changed to my desktop ubuntu 8.10 in the hope a more modern installation would help. Having run through the list of available streaming radio stations and successfully playing a large random selection. the exception being thecoast.net.nz when opened in firefox claims to need adobe flash-plugin. Flash-plugin is installed so there must be some other thing that I do not have that prevents this station playing. Regards John ----- Original Message Follows -----
Just to make it interesting I now have the stream working in pretty well in firefox. A sad problem is that it is absolutely silent for some strange reason, not good for a radio stream. Vlc seems not to be working at all (no data transfer) even though the url seems to be in the correct place.....
Your original link (http://www.thecoast.net.nz/Listenlive/) was working for me in Firefox from the start. There was no need for any external application.

Incidentally, Ubuntu 9.04 is out now ;)

A couple of points there: if I load it, it displays a notice about needing the flash plugin (which I have installed), however it works anyway - the stream still plays. It's possible it needs a newer version of flash than you have installed AND it has some broken code for detecting if flash is installed.

I just clicked on it here and it played right away. Note that it ALSO says "You need the Flash plugin to view this site - you can download the flash plugin here for free" Perhaps just ingore the message and wait long enough for the stream to buffer up?
