Announcing Ubuntu 6.10

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tollef Fog Heen <tfheen(a)ubuntu.com> Date: 26-Oct-2006 23:11 Subject: Announcing Ubuntu 6.10 The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the release of Ubuntu 6.10, codenamed "Edgy Eft". This release includes both installable Desktop CDs and alternate text-mode installation CDs for several architectures. Ubuntu is a Linux distribution for your desktop or server, with a fast and easy install, regular releases, a tight selection of excellent packages installed by default, every other package you can imagine available with a few clicks, and professional technical support from Canonical Limited and hundreds of other companies around the world. Ubuntu 6.10 will be supported for 18 months on both desktops and servers. Note that the previous stable release (6.06 LTS) is a long-term support release, and so users requiring a longer support lifetime may choose to continue using that version rather than upgrade to or install 6.10. To Get Ubuntu 6.10 ------------------ Download Ubuntu 6.10 here: New Zealand: http://nz.releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-releases/6.10/ ... To burn these CD images, you will need 700MB media. Ubuntu 6.10 media can also be purchased from a number of retailers. For more information, visit: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUbuntu About Ubuntu 6.10 ----------------- Highlights of this release include: On the desktop This version introduces a host of new features, an improved interface and a wide variety of new applications and desktop tools making Ubuntu 6.10 flexible and user-friendly. Enhancements include: * Tomboy, an easy-to-use and efficient note-taking tool * F-Spot, a photo management tool that enables tagging, photo editing and automatic uploading to on-line web management sites such as Flickr * GNOME 2.16, which in addition to new features such as enhanced power management, makes the GNOME desktop more secure, faster and more stable * Substantially faster startup and shutdown with eye-catching high-resolution graphics * The latest Firefox web browser, version 2.0, which offers inline spell check support in web forms, easy recovery of crashed sessions, built-in phishing detectors, enhanced search engine management with built in OpenSearch support, and better support for previewing and subscribing to web feeds * Proactive security features, preventing many common security vulnerabilities even before they are discovered * Evolution 2.8.0, which brings new features such as vertical message panes On the Server The Ubuntu server edition builds on the functionality from the previous release simplifying common Linux server deployment processes. It also includes a pre-release of the upcoming LTSP-5 (Linux Terminal Server Project). LTSP-5 offers clients a lower TCO (total cost of ownership), simpler installation and easier maintenance than typical IT deployments. With all data stored on the server, administrators have substantially eliminated the cost of updating individual workstations to ensure their security. Enhancements to LTSP-5 include: * Automatic network configuration with DHCP service for servers with two or more network cards attached -- available with the alternate CD installer * Language and session selection from the LTSP login manager -- allowing a user to choose from any of the languages and desktop sessions installed on the server * Support for locally attached devices on thin clients -- allowing users to access cameras, iPods or USB sticks on the thin client * Printing support - enabling printing on a local printer from the thin client * Full support for Etherboot Localization * Automatic setup of non-Latin input methods * Menu item translations included in language packs, for faster integration of new and updated translations provided through Rosetta * Ongoing translation updates from the Rosetta web service: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/edgy/+translations Installation and Upgrades Under the hood * GCC 4.1 * Glibc 2.4 * Linux 2.6.17 As always, Ubuntu includes the very best of the 100% Free / Libre application software world, and each new release incorporates countless new features and bug fixes from the global development community. Looks like I need to make another request for CD's from Canonical. With the new kit I'm getting I think I'd better order the x64 bundle. I'm going to dual boot the new kit because I will have the room on the drives to be able to dedicate my current 80gb to Linux (The 250gb will be holding my Windows install). Currently I have a half dozen each of Ubuntu and Kubuntu 32 bit editions - all Dapper Drake. If anyone needs some let me know. J -- James Pluck PalmOS Ergo Sum

I don't think they are doing free 6.10 - just 6.06 is my understanding. Ian -- Ian McDonald Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group Department of Computer Science University of Waikato New Zealand

Piles of 6.10 CDs will be sent to authorised Ubuntu LoCo teams. If you want to be able to get one from ubuntu-nz, join the mailing list (http://www.ubuntu-nz.org/) and find ways to help us kick ass! Craig

The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the release of Ubuntu 6.10, codenamed "Edgy Eft". This release includes both installable Desktop CDs and alternate text-mode installation CDs for several architectures.
I'm currently downloading 6.10 i386 desktop, alternate and server by Torrent as my monthly usage expires today and I have 5 GB free! If you want a copy on Monday at WLUG tell me which one you want by emailing me at ian.mcdonald(a)jandi.co.nz and bring a blank CDR which isn't totally nasty (e.g. no Transonic) and I'll swap you one. You need to tell me by Sunday if you want to get one for sure. However if you have heaps of data cap left and if you want to help the community you can also download through bittorrent clients and keep sharing after you have finished the download. I'd say the rest of the world started waking up.... were you downloading from the NZ mirror or offshore? Depending on how you're downloading you might be able to resume from New Zealand site. Another option is to use BitTorrent but then you will lose what you've downloaded so far. -- Ian McDonald Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group Department of Computer Science University of Waikato New Zealand

nz.archive.ubuntu.com seemed to fall over. You might like to try resuming your download from http://packages.debian.co.nz/ftp/ubuntu-iso/6.10/. Craig

I started downloading from the NZ site i got from WLUG this morning. Does this mean my 47% download is wasted? Jeff On Fri, 2006-10-27 at 13:29 +1300, Craig Box wrote:

Does your client support resuming? If you have that 47% file, you can use wget to continue the download: wget -c http://new/source.of.file Craig

And they'll all be on http://kiaoracd.org.nz/files/ in about another half hour. desktop-386 is done already. Anything else is done when the md5 works out, otherwise just keep using wget -c and follow it as it grows.

jodi(a)its-devel:~$ gksudo "update-manager -c" (I'll d/l the iso when the rest of the world has finished) Only just rebooted into it - still it boots nicely and most of the apps I use still appear to work. Nice to have Firefox 2 straight out of the box. Interesting to note that Workplace Switcher defaults to only 2 workplaces rather than the usual 4 but then perhaps 2 is enough for many ppl Cheers Jodi -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jodi Thomson, Mr (BA, A+, MCP) IT Support Engineer - Turbo Investments Group Ltd Phone: +64 6 834-0537 ext 1008 cell: +64 21 799 961 jodi.thomson(a)turbogroup.co.nz "Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time.
