Looking further back at the Tom’s Hardware articles, I found this one <https://www.tomshardware.com/laptops/student-builds-open-source-laptop-in-6-months-uses-4k-amoled-screen-and-has-7h-battery-life> about a senior high-school student’s project to build his own laptop from off-the-shelf parts. Its core is a Raspberry-Pi competitor, it has a 4K display, and can manage 7 hours of battery life. The entire effort took six months. And the result doesn’t look too shabby, either.
