Hi Wlug,
Can you please tell me what modem error code 2 means and how to fix the problem so I can get my modem to activate in Fedorra.
When asking questions like this, you should include, at a minimum: * The version of your linux distribution. You're using Fedora, but which version? * Your architecture - x86 (intel/amd), I guess. 32bit or 64bit? If you don't know, include the output from the command "uname -a" run inside a terminal. You should also include information specific to your question: * The brand and model of your modem, and whether it's dialup or DSL, internal or external. Including the exact error details will help a lot - you get "error code 2", but in what context? I appreciate that you probably don't have easy email access from linux yet, as your modem isn't working - so if you could save the above information to a USB stick, that would probably be the easiest way to get the information into an email

Hi Wlug The Box has a 64 bit AMD Athlon Dual Core Processor with 8 Gig of Ram and a 250 Gig hard Drive. The internal modem uses a Conextant Chipset and the External modem is a USB D-Link DU-562M The OS is Fedora Core 5 bought from Dick Smith at the Base for 9c. When it boots it reports a segmentation fault 1294 "kdzu" but it seems to boot up o.k. into Gnome and run the games o.k. I wouldn't recommend using an OS that's older than the computer. It's the workshop tomorrow - might be a good idea to take your computer along and try some other systems. As far as I can see, the USB modems are no different from the internal modems, ie they are HAM (host assisted modems) - just a different interface that's in use - and a pain in the nether regions for Linux. Hi Michael, The Fedora DVD Disk has a seperate disk for 64 Bit AMD Chips and I used that disk. I am not sure if I am going to be able to get transport to the fixit tomorrow. I'm afraid I agree with Michael - your version of Fedora is too old, and as a Linux beginner you'll be making things much harder for yourself by not running an up-to-date version. Recent versions of the main distributions often include updated drivers that may work better with your hardware. I'm sure someone on the list can supply you with the latest Fedora, and if not I'd be happy to snailmail you a 64bit Ubuntu DVD. Keep us posted, and best of luck with your foray into Linux - it'll be worth it, honest! Hi Ian, O.K. Thanks for that. I will see if I make it to the Fix it tomorrow before taking you up on your offer of a snail mail 64 bit Ubuntu Disk. Even though this modem thing has been frustrating, we have had fun with Linux sofar, especially the games. My partner finds the version of Majong on Gnome better than her Windows games. Just checked my discs - feel a bit like the shonky salesman who opens his waistcoat to reveal a collection of watches! My list of 64-bit OSs is:- Ubuntu 8.10, 7.10 Suse 11.0, 10.3 You're welcome to call and pick up a copy. Have lots of 32-bit discs! Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit is going well on this laptop, so I haven't been tempted to download and try the 64-bit version. It's the first time the wireless on this computer has worked "out of the box" with Ubuntu - wasn't difficult to get 8.10 working with wireless, but it needed extra software to be installed. Fedora 10 (32-bit) also had wireless working "out of the box". Michael

Hello, I intend to be at the fixit after 1230pm tomorrow. I've got a 64bit Linux Mint 7 ISO http://www.linuxmint.com/ Which is a polished version of Ubuntu with all the media codecs, java and flash ready to go. With 8Gig of Ram you'll probably want to use a 64bit version. AFAIK the Conexant support might include 32bit code which may complicate things a little. But the ia32libs might work around that. Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris, Sounds great. If I make it there we can give it a worle. However at this stage of my understanding of Linux I am totally in the dark as to what Linuxmint is. Also to me ISO means "International Standards Organization". I think it might mean something different in your email? As a further consideration: The USB one mentioned in the above link is relatively future proof, ie some new computer no longer have serial I/O ports. Most computers will continue to support USB for some time to come. However, if you decide to connected your computers via and ethernet network and use one computer as the 'gateway', then you could use a computer with a Serial I/O port and a older conventional external modem. There are still many lying around and some WLUG club members may be willing to sell or give you one.. Otherwise Trademe may offer some options. If you are new to Linux or this modem will form your primary connection to the internet, its best to avoid the internal/Winmodem problem. Any cheap USB modem is unlikely to be a *real* modem either. Hi, any error code is going to be specific to whatever program is displaying the message to you. Do you know which program gave you this message? Error reporting is one of those things where usability leaves a lot to be desired (in all software, not just OSS), but in the linux kernel, error number 2 means "no such file or directory", so if the application is just reporting an error from a library function, then it probably means it tried to open a file that isn't there. Obviously it would be much more useful if the people who wrote that software told you *which* file it tried to open, assuming the error message is from the kernel and is not using the program's own error codes. John

I'm not sure if your modem is a so-called win-modem or not, but if it is the scanModem tool might help. Its available from the excellent linmodems site (linkage below). At the very least, running the script should help you to identify what modem chipset you are working with, and perhaps we can help you from there. HTH.
