Hi all does anyone have an old external 56k serial modem for sale? I have given up trying to make my 56k Lucent internal modem work. Glenn Morrissey.

Hi Glen, If you have no joy in getting an old one try a "Netcom Megalink I" from Ascent in Auckland. Thanks to a heroic effort by Bruce Kingsbury at a fix it, I have it working very nicely on Ubuntu 8. Not sure how you will go on later verions of Ubuntu though, as evidently the support for dialup is getting less and less. However it browses the web about as fast as New Zealand broadband. I have a box of untested winmodems here which might be worth a look. Not all winmodems are equally difficult, some (though rather few) are as easy as clicking a box in the restricted drivers manager.. Unfortunately I've run out of spare externals. I'll try and pick up a few more at eday in September (if they're having it again..) On 23 July 2010 04:10, Robert D Davidson <robert(a)datamatrix.co.nz> wrote:
