Re: [wlug] Ubuntu failing to install/work

sadly the bios memory setting is maxed out on my machine so am unable to alter memory allocation. John ----- Original Message Follows -----
The only thing I can think of is that there isn't enough video memory, or the video card is too old; I had similar problems when trying to install an earlier version of Ubuntu on a machine with a 32MB Riva TNT card -- it would get as far as starting to load the GDM, then crash to black/brown.

Hi All, Have tried to install Ubuntu 8.10 desktop 386 with a number of different c/d's First a rc then two final desktops including trying the live versions also an alternate install. They all have a common problem, booting to the welcome/login then crashing to a black or plain light brown blank screen The install appears to slow down as it progresses, this is particularly true of the alternate, the last few files take a long time to config/install. I thought that it may be a memory problem and increased the ram to 700+ however that made no difference at all. Someone suggested that my psu may be faulty but I have installed puppy linux in two or three times without a problem. Knoppix live works just fine Any help would be appreciated. Regards John
