I foolishly used a usb 1 device on my computer and since then have not been able to use my usb 2 card reader or my pen drive or usb hard drive. I rebooted with the devices plugged in but they still weren't detected. Ron Dean

Do they work if you run Ubuntu as a live cd rather than running off your hard drive? -- Ian McDonald Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group Department of Computer Science University of Waikato New Zealand

They didn't work from the live cd but a small piece fell out of the front usb port. Maybe thats the reason it wouldn't work and its also effecting the rear ports as well.

Normally there is nothing "wrong" with doing this, a USB 1 device will just make all the USB devices on the same controller run at the slower USB1 speed instead of the much faster USB2 speed. (There are also USB1.1 devices that run at the slower speed but allow the other devices on the same controller to run at the proper speed.)

well that sounds much worse. that sounds like one of the ports has shorted and maybe damaged the controller. If it's a laptop, try removing the battery and power and leave it off for a few minutes (I had a laptop that had a usb port accidentally shorted that wouldn't power back on until we did that.) If it's a new enough machine (either laptop or desktop), it should have multiple controllers so at least some of the ports should still work, so you can buy an external USB hub if you need to attach more USB devices to it. (Also, I might be entirely wrong and there is no permanent hardware damage. Check the system log for any messages from the usb drivers, eg "dmesg | less") John

It sounds like possible hardware but I'd also try a different live CD that you know worked previously e.g. Ubuntu 6.06 if it worked for you. It might be a kernel or udev issue also. If it works on another version then log a bug for it. It sounds like you've snapped the little plastic part off inside the connector. You probably need to get the whole connector replaced. You might also have damaged the controller if anything got shorted, but I've found they're surprisingly robust. Mine was shorted for about 15 minutes before I noticed (from the burning smell) and it still worked afterwards.

I tried with Knoppix 4 and it detected all the devices however my front Usb ports are broken I then retried it with Ubuntu 6.10 and much to my embarrassment I then ran clean up Desktop by Name and the Icons were hidden behind folders. However I also checked /media and the items weren't present previously but they are now

The main thing is that it works now (apart from the front). Often telling people is enough to get the problem solved (and often embarasses you at same time - I know it happens to me lots!) -- Ian McDonald Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group Department of Computer Science University of Waikato New Zealand

Another question. I am thinking of buying a usb hub from Dick Smith's. On its web site it says it is compatible with Windows and Mac but doesn't mention Linux. Would they be operating system independent?

USB mass storage is a standard. You can format your stick any way you like - most are FAT32, thus compatible with Windows/Mac/Linux. Craig

Yes Hubs usually just work with Linux, and you get 7 days to return it if it doesn't and get a refund too . As standard as the mass device. Craig Box wrote:
