I have upgraded my ubuntu to 6.10. The problem is that after the logo, the login freezes with a blank cream coloured screen prior to the login stage. Does anyone know how to remedy this? Much appreciated John

It could be a problem with the support for your graphics card. Without any more information though it's almost impossible to tell exactly what is causing the freeze. If you are comfortable using a command line, you can boot up in "recovery mode" and examing the various log files to at least get some idea of where abouts in the boot process it is dying. However, I suspect if you were comfortable with a command line you wouldn't be asking for help, so here are some hints: less /var/log/syslog and look to see what is the last couple of lines before the last time it crashed. It's also possible that the machine itself hasn't completely hung, and it's just the graphics that have crashed, leaving everything else running invisibly underneath. The logs for the Xorg graphics server can be seen with less /var/log/Xorg.0.log To figure out what type of graphics card you have, you can try: lspci | less (which will show all the devices, and you can look which one is for "graphics" or "VGA" or something similar) If you need more help, feel free to ask the list again, or try searching the ubuntu forums with your computer model which will let you know if other people are having the same problem, or if there's something weird about just yours that others aren't having :) John
