Re: [wlug] I am stuck at the command line.

Cool, I got the thing to extract and setup. I thought I would be tricky and run "iwconfig" but it reports back no wireless devices. I guess I need to read up some more before proceeding further. At least I made some progress. Thanks for the help so far. Regards John ----- Original Message Follows -----

Hi John,
I'll step through and point out what was wrong with each command. On Tue, 2004-09-14 at 15:24, jaytee(a)clear.net.nz wrote:

linux:/home/john # / tar zxvf SMC_USB_WIRELESS_2662W.tar.gz bash: /: is a directory
I'm not quite sure where the / here comes from, it is what is causing the problem.
linux:/home/john # tar zxvf SMC_USB_WIRELESS_2662.tar.gz tar: SMC_USB_WIRELESS_2662.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
6) If you can see the filename SMC_USB_WIRELESS_2662.tar.gz in the output of the previous command continue, otherwise go back to step 1
It looks like those filenames are subtly different. SMC_USB_WIRELESS_2662W.tar.gz versus SMC_USB_WIRELESS_2662.tar.gz (without a "W" following the 2662). Make sure you use the correct one for the "tar" command, depending on what the file is actually called.

Without wanting to sound unhelpful, we got this wireless card working at the Installfest, did we not? There are often many tricky ways to make hardware work on Linux, or one easy "just go down the road that makes it work" option. Craig
