I gave my wife a few spare copies of Kiaora CD to sell on Trademe (mostly just to get the name out there) and they were pulled. When I asked why, we got the following reply; Dear Susan, Thanks for contacting us. You are not allowed to list CDs containing programs that you do not hold the copyright for. These CDs contained a number of programs freely available on the internet. CDs of this nature are considered piracy and will be removed. If you have any further questions or if I can be of any further help please do not hesitate to contact me. Regards, Sophie I sent a fairly grumpy reply back citing the GPL, RMS's page on 'selling free software' and so on, but now Sue's quite upset and refuses to have anything more to do with it. What else can I do. TM seems to have some 'very confused' ideas of what constitutes piracy, and I have a hard time calmly explaining the issues when I feel like they're calling me (or Sue) a criminal and removing perfectly legitimate listings with no compensation. -- Disclaimer: Any disclaimer attached to this message may be ignored.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/listings/listings_search_results.asp?searchtype=GENERAL&searchstring=Linux&go.x=0&go.y=0&searchregion=100 Ask them to pull all those, and then if they do, bring it up with Computerworld etc. For that matter, if I buy boxed software, I don't own the copyright on the programs, just a licence to use them. My fairly grumpy reply included; "I'd also like to know how many members of trademe 'hold the copyright for' Windows XP, as opposed to simply having the legal right to use and (possibly) the legal right to resell the copy they hold." And I think I mentioned that they should according to what they'd just told me, remove; * The ENTIRE Linux category including Ubuntu, Fedora, Redhat, Debian, Xandros, Mephis, Suse, and others. * Knoppix, Kanotix, Kubuntu and Morphix live CDs * Ultimate Boot, Don't Panic, PC Rescue, Insert, and most other system rescue disks which are based on Linux or FreeBSD.

I also noticed a lot of CDs full of ringtones for sale.. Who holds the licences for theses? -----Original Message----- From: zcat [mailto:zcat(a)maxnet.co.nz] Sent: Sunday, 5 June 2005 5:53 p.m. To: Waikato Linux Users Group Subject: Re: [wlug] Kiaora CD is 'piracy' ?!!
