Steam On Linux Use Skyrocketed In March - More Than Double The macOS Gaming Marketshare
I keep thinking: if the number of Linux-based users of Steam is so much greater than those using macOS, doesn’t that mean that the size of the overall desktop Linux installed base is now larger than that of macOS? Because otherwise, macOS users must be somehow less fun-loving that Linux users ... which seems hard to accept. <https://www.phoronix.com/news/Steam-On-Linux-Tops-5p>
I was looking for the point of crossover, when the Linux share of Steam users just surpassed that of Mac users. steampowered.com doesn’t seem to offer any data archives, but the page is regularly snapshotted at archive.org. And here is the earliest such point I can find, from July 2023: <https://web.archive.org/web/20230804092411/https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam?platform=combined>. Click on the “OS Version” label and you can see 1.84% for OSX and 1.96% for Linux. Interesting that Valve’s own SteamOS doesn’t seem to register at that stage.
