FYI: I have been using Kubuntu 16.04 beta for the last week or so from a USB 5400rpm HDD. Install went smoothly (although did isolate production HDDs for obvious reasons during install only), recommend clean install. GUI nice and snappy, no crashes of anything (apart from WinGames via Wine). Version of Steam ( http://store.steampowered.com/ ) is from Precise Pangolin I believe, had to be manually installed. Half Life 2 Lost Coast gets 34ish FPS on 1.86GHz Core2Duo, 4GB RAM, 1920x1080, ATI Radeon HD 4870, everything on/up. Gets a bit chuggy but suspect is USB 2.0 HDD. Vid card cooling working fine, auto ramp up/down. Got Fallout3.exe via Wine running, bit chuggy, and games locks up like clockwork every couple of hours, but close window, restart and off you go again. TF2 under steam runs OK, few other games too.
