A Linux distribution for science geeks

"Fedora Scientific is a Linux distribution specifically designed for enabling open science. It is a Fedora spin targeted at users whose work involves scientific and numerical computing. Perhaps like other Fedora spins, it was conceived out of a simple need: the need to avoid constantly installing the same software on a fresh Linux installation."
From a researcher's point of view, it's a good range of pre-installed tools (see packages list below).

It's very nice I'm currently running this spin at work. Sent from my iPhone

Curiosity got the better of me so I downloaded the 64-bit iso and burnt a DVD. I'll bring along my laptop and the DVD to tonight's wlug meeting if anyone would like to play with Fedora 20-1 Scientific KDE live. I'll also bring the .iso file ...if you have 3.5GB's of space on a USB stick. cheers, Ian.

I'd like to get my hands on that ISO. When I started downloading it the other day, it said "8 hours remaining" (torrent didn't work at all) and I canceled it. See you tonight. We can probably figure it out at the meeting but I'd be interested to know what version of Latex it has installed. My Ubuntu 12.04 was miles behind the Tex repos so I ended up installing the Tex/Latex in its own directory, ie /texlive I understand now there is a bit more a concerted effort to keep the ubuntu package manager upto date to the tex reposositories. I had a look through this distro's package list and it seemed to be relying on Fedora for its installed software Cheers, Chris -----Original Message----- From: wlug-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz [mailto:wlug-bounces(a)list.waikato.ac.nz] On Behalf Of Paul Wilson Sent: Monday, 23 June 2014 9:33 a.m. To: Waikato Linux Users Group Subject: Re: [wlug] A Linux distribution for science geeks I have it on a USB stick as well will bring it along tonight

If you are contemplating downloading the 3.5GB iso file for Fedora Scientific Live, then be aware that after installing there currently are over 1400 updates to be performed. These require downloading another 2.5GB's of files. I suspect that the updating of Latex is a major contributor to the 2.5GB's involved. cheers, Ian FYI: After doing the updates... $ latex -versionpdfTeX 3.1415926-2.6-1.40.14 (TeX Live 2014/dev)kpathsea version 6.2.0dev...
