Do not install Mandrake 9.2 on LG based CD-ROM drives. Many people have reported that their CD drives are fried/broken when installing Mandrake 9.2. LG drives are common on Dell PCs. See: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/ http://www.mandrakeclub.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Splatt_Forum&file=viewtopic&topic=12568&forum=9&post_id=44542 The issue is not thought to affect any other CD-ROM drives. Apologies to those that have read this message more than once, but it is important to let people know ASAP. ------------------ www.linuxshop.co.nz ------------------ Daniel Robertson Linux Shop Ltd P O Box 108001, Symonds St, Auckland 1035 Fax: (09) 624 4206 ------------------ www.linuxshop.co.nz ------------------

The Mandrake site makes the claim ... "These drives are not compatable with Linux" Can anyone clarify, if the drives are not compatable with linux, or just with Mandrake Linux ........ In short, how serious is this issue for The lug,, None of my drives are LG, so I cannot offer anything other than questions at this time. On Sat, 2003-10-25 at 16:56, Linux Shop wrote:

The Mandrake site makes the claim ...
"These drives are not compatable with Linux"
They mean "These drives are not compatible with the IDE and ATAPI standards".
Can anyone clarify, if the drives are not compatable with linux, or just with Mandrake Linux ........
Mandrake has released a production OS with a prerelease kernel. The problem is for packet-writing added to the 2.4.22-rc2q5 kernel on Aug 15. A flush command which happens while deciding whether a drive is a CD writer or not has been redefined by LG to mean "upload firmware" (with predictable results). Juan Quintela from the Mandrake Cooker list: "Yep, whoeved decided at LG that reusing for UPLOAD_FIRMWARE command FLUSH_CACHE comand should be shoot.
In short, how serious is this issue for The lug,, None of my drives are LG, so I cannot offer anything other than questions at this time.
Very little, as the LUG doesn't really "support" Mandrake, and I don't think anyone over here got the ISO's before people heard about the error. CDRW's will read the disc fine. Craig

Thanks for the clarification. I suppose a patch will be in place in the final kernal, but its a wider than mandrake problem. I can see programs like Musicmatch having simlar problems when they sacn a windows box to see if it can find a cd writer to burn your music cd's too. OH THE JOY . Those are fairly common drives; anyone want to place bets on how long it takes before a drive-toasting virus gets released? --- This email has been sent on 100% RECYCLED electrons!

They Have, Its called Mandrake 9.2 ;-) Sadly for the virus writers, the issue has been identified prior to its release into the wild, Only mandrake club members, And their mates, got burned. On Mon, 2003-10-27 at 12:41, zcat wrote:
