Hi everyone I'm looking for opinions on Squid. If anyone runs it, or has run it, can they offer their views on it, and comment on any possible pitfalls? I'm wanting to install it on Hoary to act as a caching web proxy on a firewall box. I notice that Squid doesn't appear to be in the Universe or Multiverse repos for Hoary (unless I'm using aptitude completely wrong). I have no problems compiling from source; I'm lazy and like to install from binary where possible. Does anyone know of third party repos with Squid in them? Any decent third party repos would be handy actually. Failing that, does anyone know why Squid is not included in the Hoary repos? It seems fairly popular and I would have expected to see it there. Regards Bnonn

Correct. That's because it is in main. :)

The only thing you really need in Debian is newer stuff, and for that, look to backports.ubuntuforums.org. Not really up to date at the moment as the Ubuntu Backports Project has been adopted by Ubuntu officially, and will probably be moving soon. Craig

Right, so I'm definitely using aptitude wrong :)
matt(a)neon ~ $ aptitude search squid p squid - Internet Object Cache (WWW proxy cache) p squid-cgi - Squid cache manager CGI program p squid-common - Internet Object Cache (WWW proxy cache) - common file v squid-novm - p squid-prefetch - Simple page-prefetch for Squid web proxy p squidclient - Command line URL extractor that talks to (a) squid p squidguard - filter, redirector and access controller plug for Squid v squidguard-blacklists - p squidtaild - Squid log monitoring program p squidview - monitors and analyzes squid access.log files p webmin-squid - squid control module for webmin matt(a)neon ~ $ sudo aptitude install squid Password: Will probably do what you want. Note that once you've got Squid installed you probably want to install SRG (http://www.crc.net.nz/software/srg.php) as well to monitor your usage. SRG is included in Sarge but didn't make it to hoary afaik. Regards -- Matt Brown matt(a)mattb.net.nz Mob +64 275 611 544 www.mattb.net.nz
