Some years ago, Radio New Zealand started making its audio downloads available in Ogg Vorbis format, as an alternative to MP3. As I recall, this coincided with a visit from Richard Stallman, and no doubt his persuasiveness had something to do with it. (Checking the timestamps on my downloads, Stallman was interviewed by Kim Hill on “Nine to Noon” on 9th August 2008.) I was revisiting the Mediawatch page after a long absence <https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/mediawatch>, and I see they have reverted to MP3-only format for their downloads now. Were people being confused by .ogg files? All the open-source players can handle them, so what players were they trying to use?

RNZ does default to MP3 for audio downloads, but Ogg is still available for podcasts. If you click on the Download button you get six options: Download as Ogg Download as MP3 Download as ACC Play Ogg in browser Play MP3 in browser Play ACC in browser I suspect I am one of very few who choose the Play Ogg in browser or Download as Ogg options. I don't fancy the chances of the options surviving the next update/merger/reorganisation of RNZ or the media. Rod On Tue, 21 Feb 2023 at 11:54, Lawrence D'Oliveiro <ldo(a)geek-central.gen.nz> wrote:

By George, you are right. I just tried the most recent Mediawatch episode, and all those options are there. Because I am in the habit of right-clicking and just doing “Copy Link”, you see, so I tend not to see these extra scripted menu options. ;) Sorry, RNZ, that I impugned your attitude to openness. ;)
