Hi, guys Im looking at putting a personal web page online, in the next few months. I have chosen the domain name I am after and plan to purchase this soon. I would perfer to use the .net suffix, but a .co.nz could be used as a fallback option. Once the website is in a state worth uploading I will go for a web-hosting company solution (depending on price)(Linux host must, wordpress support, and preference for freedom to run personal python scripts are the only real requirments) . Any one got recommendations on a company to go with.

If you are only going to have low traffic site with a low importance on uptime, then sometimes just running the webserver over an ADSL connection is an acceptable option, seeing as you already pay for the connection. I find it extremely convenient having a local webserver (I run one on my laptop) that I can copy stuff onto with very little hassle. -- Sam On Fri, May 15, 2009 at 8:24 PM, Ronnie Collinson <notthinking(a)gmail.com> wrote:

My general plan is to run a local webserver for devlopment. However im living in a flatting situation, there is times when the router gets restarted due to windows machines wireless "issues", IMO its not the best enviroment for a semi-professional personal webpage

If you want a shell account on your own server, RimuHosting sound like the obvious winner here - based in Cambridge, and supporters of the WLUG. (Paid WLUG members - a bargain at $20/year - get a shell on the WLUG server also, so you could use that, and just get a hosting account for your blog. Or even ask if we can host it on Hoiho for you.) If your interested in getting an account on hoiho, be sure to attend this month's meeting. Chris, our secretary, will be talking about how to get that setup and show how to create your ssh keys etc... http://wlug.org.nz/MeetingTopics.2009-05-25 Best, John Craig Box wrote:

On the root access point thats exactly what I thought would be the case, but there is nothing "special" about the setup im wanting. Im still debating the domain name, .net and .co.nz are availble but .com is taken by one of "reserved domain" kind of pages (links to nothing in particular). The topic for next time sounds intersting thou, pretty sure I will attend.
