Should I get an Arduino or Raspberry Pi?

Using both is excellent. They both have their purposes... Arduino to do the real life sensor kinda stuff, and sending it to the pi. Pi can then use it and maybe save to a database, serve a webserver. Absolutely. The two serve entirely different purposes, and you may quite likely need both.
