Fedora core 5 will (temporarily) break non-GPL modules [Posted March 16, 2006 by corbet] Many Fedora users are anxiously waiting for the Fedora Core 5 release, scheduled for Monday, March 20. Be warned that some of you may have to wait a little longer, however: the kernel shipped with FC5 effectively disallows the loading of any non-GPL modules. That behavior was a mistake, and a fix has already been made, but it is too late to get that fix into the initial FC5 release. So binary module users will want to wait until the first errata kernel is released (a few days, at most) before upgrading. -- Ian McDonald Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group Department of Computer Science University of Waikato New Zealand

non-GPL kernel mods are a break the GPL anyways.. one should not be using them ;) xorg 7 and my ATi card play nicely, even in dual head mode. Michael.

There is a reasonable amount of debate about whether that actually is the case when code is done using EXPORT_SYMBOL which is what most module hooks are. There is a growing move to use EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL which people absolutely cannot use in closed source drivers. Slowly things are being changed over and it is probably a matter of time before something is broken on purpose..... (there have been accidental ones which got reverted quickly) -- Ian McDonald Web: http://wand.net.nz/~iam4 Blog: http://imcdnzl.blogspot.com WAND Network Research Group Department of Computer Science University of Waikato New Zealand

Indeed, Greg KH recently submitted a EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL_FUTURE() for some imterfaces, also, since Greg KH does a heap of work on the USB sub-sys, I think most of it is EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL now, but I could be mistaken. He also maintains a patch to the PCI sub-sys to export that as GPL only, but is not going to apply it.. yet. The time will come :) Michael
