The Waikato Linux Users Group have a meeting in one week today. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- !!Live fixup demonstration Monday 25 October (Labour Day) - taking advantage of the holiday, we will start at 4pm, look over a few peoples problems, and run a presentation at 5pm with an introduction on how to find answers to Linux questions online (especially Google and the Wiki), 10 min Q&A and then go over fixing some problems live on a big screen. This one is a great opportunity for new and inexperienced users! Please bring machines. 4pm, 25 October%%% University of Waikato%%% Room: LitB.G.02 Park in Gate 1, Knighton Rd * http://www.waikato.ac.nz/perl-bin/map/tt-map.pl?term=litb * http://www.waikato.ac.nz/contacts/map.pdf

Thanx for puting this on. I'm looking forward to getting some challenges achieved.

Hi all, Just something to note with regard to this. The rooms we are using do not allow us to test modems. I am unsure whether we have internet access either - can one of the Uni people clear this up? Greig. On Mon, 2004-10-18 at 07:11 +1300, Meeting Reminder bot wrote:

I'm fairly sure we will have Internet access. Jamie is away today, I'll get him to confirm tommorrow. Daniel

Yes, At the end of the last meeting Jamie said that it was possible to get CRCnet hooked up into the room, so long as he tells Lindsay before 5pm on Friday! If there are any specific packages / software that we would like mirrored locally please let me know before Friday and I'll see if it can be done. That is a good point... The Internet connection with the last meeting was organised through CRCNet, which to say the least, has saved me a lot of plea bargaining and a mountain of paperwork. It's also saved WLUG quite a bit of money. Whether we can ascertain the same arrangement is over to Jamie. A phone line could be provided, but there is a cost involved. How many people are likely to need a phone line for testing their modem ?

I can help here if its just drivers and testing they dial out. Then I can bring a PABX down and have a computer on the end to connect to, it will look like an isp set up for ppp from a standard windows dial up. If I have net access on the machine that will be shared. Not quite the real thing, but its what I use for testing. Lindsay Druett wrote:

We could take along a machine with a modem in it set to answer. This means we can set it up to test the actual modem is working. The only thing to be careful of is the phone number/user name/password which are all very easy to show users how to change on the day if necessary and the phone number in particular is easy to check on the ISP's website. We may need a PABX or something to deal with getting two modems plugged "back to back".

Just to confirm, Internet access will be available to enable people to fix whatever problems they have with their machine. Please be aware that Internet access is not available for "open slather" use and anyone downloading illegal or unrelated material will be required to disconnect their machine immediately. Unless someone comes up with an in-room isolated modem test center, we will not have any phone lines for testing dial up access or modems. Sorry about that. Cheers, Jamie

Also, *please* be aware that it won't stop there either. http://calendar.waikato.ac.nz/policies/computersystems.html
