Re: [wlug] Proposal: WLUG and Google Earth

I think it is a wonderful idea. I read that Google Earth had updated in June last year including some NZ areas. It seems from some of the comments on site that some of the Wellington images in the update were older than the ones they replaced. How frustrating would it be to submit some neat clear recent shots only to have them "superseded" by some cloudy old photos that Google earth already had licenses for? Regards John ----- Original Message Follows -----
Hi,
For years now, I've been using Google Earth on and off. More and more of New Zealand is now there in good detail, but to this day Hamilton and most other Waikato towns remain a sad archaic green and white blur.
I wrote to the Hamilton City Council IT department over a year ago, encouraging them to scan/submit aerial photos, but all I got was a 'we might look into it one of these days' type of response.
I'm sure that the Waikato Times and/or Hamilton Press would be very interested in covering the project, and it could be a good opportunity for WLUG to extol the virtues of F/OSS here in the Waikato.
Would be a great look for WLUG, Linux etc if the scanned photos were post-processed with some 1337 GIMP plugins.
Thoughts?
Cheers David

For Hamilton, almost *anything* would be better than what's up there at the moment. Cheers David

The big question is... "What can we do to improve the aerial images that google have for googleearth and googlemaps since the HCC don't seem really interested in this project ?" I know the images the google currently has suck, and ironically, farmland only a casual walk from my place are clear as, but has anyone got any ideas, or can give HCC a prod ?

While it would be good idea to get WLUG involved, it isn't even remotely Linux related (other than GE is available for Linux of course). Maybe we should get the Waikato Times to launch a campaign to get HCC to get the images into Google Earth instead. I'm sure if the council get a couple of thousand letters, they can't ignore their ratepayers :) -- simon

I agree with that. On 22/07/07, Lindsay Druett <lindsay(a)wired.net.nz> wrote:

Presumably, Google has some streamlined method of getting photographs into the database, and will have a series of licences with their suppliers to cover copyright issues. I've got my doubts as to the practicality of an "ad hoc" update. Perhaps Google should be asked when it plans to update the photographs of New Zealand and/or Hamilton? Michael

If you look here: http://www.linz.govt.nz/core/topography/aerialandorthophotos/orthophotoindex... You'll see the lastest held by Linz are from 2002. My understanding was that these aerial photos were the primary source, in which case I have serious doubts that the Council would have that much influence. I have no Idea of current costs of doing these photo-runs but 40-odd years ago a 10-mile string from 25,000ft was in the order of $15,000 per frame. I image that inflation has promoted chicken-feed to elephant-feed :-) John
