Countries like Russia, Iran and China are exerting more and more control over how Internet traffic crosses their borders. They are moving towards--or in some cases have already achieved--the ability to completely cut themselves off from the wider Internet and continue functioning with some autonomy. Also seems like China is promoting new protocol standards that will make this process even easier. I also learned of the existence of an organization called “Internet Sans Frontières”, which you would think is a tautology.
