Hi everyone I'm using 2D animation as theme for next Monday's meeting: "Let's pool our resources and figure out/discover software that can be used for 2D animations. Open-source candidates could be GIMP (https://www.gimp.org/) and Synfig Studio (https://www.synfig.org/)." https://www.meetup.com/WaikatoLinuxUsersGroup/events/257884244/ Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann Dept. of Computer Science University of Waikato, NZ +64 (7) 858-5174 http://www.cms.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ http://www.data-mining.co.nz/

Hi Peter,
I'm using 2D animation as theme for next Monday's meeting:
I'd be happy to do a demonstration of the animation that I've experimented with. LibreOffice Draw supports a page having many layers. Upon writing and running a LibreOffice BASIC program it can control at various speeds which layers are displayed and which are not. This feature is used to produce a simple animation. cheers, Ian.

Thanks, Ian. I've added you to the line up: https://www.meetup.com/WaikatoLinuxUsersGroup/events/257884244/ Cheers, Peter -- Peter Reutemann Dept. of Computer Science University of Waikato, NZ +64 (7) 858-5174 http://www.cms.waikato.ac.nz/~fracpete/ http://www.data-mining.co.nz/

Just to add to this, I think someone said Inkscape was unsuitable for animations. Seems a bunch of people would beg to differ. For example, see some of these tutes: <https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=inkscape+animation>. Lawrence

Hmm, maybe I spoke too soon. They seem to be laboriously setting up and exporting a frame at a time, with no automatic interpolation between key frames. I would say having a keyframing system is a must for animation.
